How to apply

We’re glad you’re considering joining the Mentone Community Garden Club!

You can apply for membership using the form on this page (scroll down). Our friendly membership coordinator will reach out to discuss your application with you. You will then be added to the club’s waitlist.

Please note that the club only has a limited number of plots and you may have to wait for some time before one is allocated to you.

Membership is only available to residents or ratepayers of the City of Kingston. We encourage you to check out the Community gardens listed on the City of Kingston website – some of which are very happy to have volunteers!

All members currently pay a small annual plot fee of $45 to help cover the club’s running expenses. Annual fees are reviewed by the Club Committee on a regular basis.

How we work

We have around 90 plots, nominally 7.5m x 2.5m in size. Each member is allocated a plot on which, within reason (e.g. no trees, no encroachment on your neighbour) they can plant whatever they like. Members are expected to maintain their plot in good order, free from weeds, and to work it productively. Failure to do so will result in a gentle reminder of your obligations, and in serious cases a request to relinquish the plot.

Although most members work their plots independently, there is a good spirit of cooperation, and if a member needs help (e.g. with watering while they are away) they only need to ask.

We have two major working bees during the year, in autumn and early summer. Our AGM is held on the same day as the summer working bee. These are followed by a social event and are great occasions to get to know other members.

There is a communal area with a table and seating where members can take a break and chat with other members. In the warmer months we have many social get-togethers in the garden, including barbecues.
